OUR ASSEMBLY

Next week we will be having our assembly and hope that all the parents will come to see us perform. As we have been studying about Africa, we have learned an African dance and song. We will try and act out the book "Handa´s Surprise." For the assembly, each child will need to bring in clothes. The children have written their animal and colour in their Home Diary. Please, send the clothes in as soon as possible. In Numeracy we are also learning the time: o´clock, half past and quarter past. Please, revise this with the students. We have weighed ourselves and are also learning how to read scales measuring kilos and litres. Ask the children to compare weights - Do you think this box is heavier or lighter than a kilo? Do you think this cup will hold as much as a litre of liquid?

KENYA , Florence Nightingale and times tables.

Here we are back to work and starting new topics. We will be working on AFRICA. Please, locate Kenya on a map and if possible find information about this country on Internet.
We will also begin our work in History on Florence Nightingale. The children will be able to take home a book to share with you for the weekend. When it is your weekend, please, read through the book and talk to the children about the important role she played in modern nursing. There is a direct link on the BBC schools-famous people. You will find a read along story about her.
In Maths, we will begin to learn by heart the times tables. We chant the numbers in twos, fives and tens. So now they will need to learn why. Please, do this in the following way
0 tens makes 0, 1 ten makes 10, 2 tens makes 20 3 tens makes 30, 4 tens makes 40, 5 tens makes 50, 6 tens makes 60 7 tens makes 70, 8 tens makes 80, 9 tens makes 90, 10 tens makes 100, 11 tens makes 110, 12 tens makes 120.
We are finishing off our work on electricity and should begin the work on Materials and their properties shortly.

Dear Parents, Thank you all for your support during our first term. On a whole it has been a great success. The children have worked hard and achieved the targets set them.
During the holidays, I will ask them to write in their new red Home Diary booklets. Please, help them to write at least 10 sentences about their holidays (making sure they use capital letters and full stops)!
They have also taken home 2 or 3 books to read. They may also write a book review or for those who receive the comprehension pages, please, complete.
For homework in Maths, please, revise the number bonds to 20. They should also be chanting in 2s, 5s and 10s.
Most children have taken home 2 pages on Electricity. We will be working on this topic the first two weeks of class. Please, talk to them about safety when using electric items. They should also learn the importance of electricity and how to conserve energy.

FIRE!!!!!

We had our first fire drill of the school year on Monday. The firemen came and timed us as we safely walked out of the building. They said we had done it very well. Afterwards, they gave us a talk and a demonstration on fire safety. We even got to see the fire engine. It was great fun. We enjoyed playing with the hoses. Some of us got sprinkled with water!!!

Schools, Homes and Toys of the Past

We are learning about Victorian schools, homes and toys. We have read books about this and are compiling information. I would ask you to, please, talk to your son/daughter about your school and the toys you used as children. If your son/daughter has access to any elderly person, please, allow them to talk about the schools, homes and toys they used when they were children. If you have any interesting photograph, we would appreciate seeing them.
We continue to work on adding and taking away counting on or back. Please, assure they know how to get to the nearest 10.
On Thursday, we had our first assembly and the chidlren participated in the charity fund raising. With the sale of cakes, P4 raised 200€ for charity. Thank you for collaborating.

We have enjoyed working on our Halloween Topic. We wrote poems and had fun making Jack o´lanterns. Now we will continue working on babies-human and animal. In Maths, the children should work on learning the number bonds up to 10: ei, make 8
2 + ? = 8 5 + ? = 8
make 7
4 + ? = 7 etc.
We have a mental Maths test each week and have to know the bonds by heart.
You can make this learning practical by asking..... If I have 4 sweets and there are 8 children how many more do I need?
Another suggestion is to work on week-end news. Ask the children to write 3 or 4 sentences on Sunday to tell me what they did at the weekend. After they could always draw a picture.

October- Halloween!!!!!

This month we will enjoy work on Halloween. We will learn poems and have fun making Halloween art projects. We will continue to work on adding and taking away. Please, continue to work on the number bonds to 20. Here we are hard at work learning how to bounce basketballs. It was hard work and afterwards we always drink lots of water.

Growing up!

This week we will need a small photo of ourselves when we were little. Please, send in a photo as soon as possible if you haven´t done so already. We will talk about what we could do then and all the new things we can do now. We have also been going to different places in SPAIN so if you have any photos or postcards, remember to send them in.
In Numeracy, we will revise adding and taking away. Please, revise the number bonds to 10. (two numbers when added together that make 10, ei: 4 + 6, 2 + 8 etc,)

Homework

Please, remember that most nights the children have homework. Usually they will have Maths on Monday and Wednesday, Spelling on Tuesday and Thursday. Please, sign their spelling tests before returning them to school on Monday. Every night they should read and talk about their reading book. Sometimes to help link the Science with home we will ask the parents to talk about the topic. Barnaby Bear is going away and wants us to travel with him to many different places. In preparation we are making our passports. Before going far away we will talk about Spain and the many wonderful and exciting places to visit. If you have any interesting photos or booklets, please, send them in. If there is anyone who would like to give a talk about places you have visited we would love for you to come in and share the experience. If anyone has any questions, just ask.

Working Hard

We are already working super hard in class and at home. This week we are working on A HEALTHY MEAL. Please, talk about food and those items that are important for us to eat in order to grow big and strong. (milk, meat, fish, pasta,rice, fruit and vegetable) Also remind them that there are foods which are not recommended.

Hello! I am happy to be back at the Maspalomas School after an absence of 6 years. For those of you that do not know me, I have been with Canterbury School for many years, starting my job at our main school (previously Juan XXIII) as a 4th, 3rd and 1st grade teacher. After this I went to Ruben Dario where I was head of the Infant School. I am originally from Ohio, USA where I obtained two degrees for teaching K-8th grade and also Spanish for primary students.
